  1. 1859-1914. French socialist politician and
  2. advocate of international peace. He was a
  3. lecturer in philosophy at Toulouse until his
  4. election in 1885 as a deputy (member of
  5. parliament). In 1893 he joined the Socialist
  6. Party, established a united party, and in
  7. 1904 founded the newspaper L'Humanite,
  8. becoming its editor until his assassination.
